We use advanced, sophisticated research techniques and technologies to investigate speech impairments in people with various movement disorders and their effects on speech intelligibility deficits. Lab News

Dr. Kim recently received an NIH research grant developing and establishing a speech rehabilitation model for linguistically and culturally minor groups (NIH-NIDCD, R01DC020468, PI: Yunjung Kim, $932,094).  

We are taking two presentations to New Orleans for ASHA 2022: (1) 3Ms: Management of Multilinguals with Motor speech Disorders (an invited session by the convention planning committee on motor speech disorders and other speech sound disorders in adults) and (2) Effects of deep brain stimulation on speech in Parkinson’s disease (selected as an ASHA Learning Pass session for CE credit)!

A new pub about speech intelligibility estimation, titled, “The reliability and validity of speech-language pathologists’ estimations of speech intelligibility in dysarthria“.  

A new pub with Dr. Hyunju Chung at Louisiana State University! This study examined acoustic and articulatory characteristics of semivowels /ɹ, l, w/ produced by L2 speakers of English. Read more at the News & Events at CCI

A new pub with Dr. Raymond Kent (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Dr. Li-Mei Chen (National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan) is available! This JSLHR paper reviews studies on oral and laryngeal DDK in children and adults with and without a clinical diagnosis. If you are a listener rather than a reader, this is for you (Dr. Kent @ The Speech Link podcast).

Our lab is presenting three podium talks at Motor Speech Conference 2022 (Charleston, SC, Feb 16-20): (1) Dissociating dysarthria and dialect in the kinematics of connected speech, (2) An articulatory kinematic study on Parkinson’s disease in relation to acoustic and perceptual measures, and (3) Vowel acoustics as predictors of speech intelligibility in dysarthria! 

Austin successfully defended his prelims on November 30, 2021 and became a PhD Candidate. Congrats!

Enak successfully passed his thesis prospectus on November 22, 2021! The thesis is titled “Use of a single sensor to detect articulatory deficits in Parkinson’s disease: A feasibility study”. Congrats!

A new pub! Do you want to know how L2 speakers of English depart from /l/ of their own language and approximate /l/ of native speakers of English? Here‘s the acoustic findings. 

We successfully presented two studies at ASHA 2021 (November 18-20): (1) Effects of face masks on speech acoustics and intelligibility, and (2) Speech language pathologists’ approximations of speech intelligibility in dysarthria. 

Austin was recently awarded an NIH/NIDCD F31 predoctoral fellowship to study “A multidimensional study on articulation deficits in Parkinson’s disease “. Congratulations! Read his story at News & Events at CCI!

Dr. Kim received an award to study “Vowel impairments in people with Parkinson’s disease: Focusing on variability” from the Committee on Faculty Research Support (COFRS), FSU Council on Research Creativity (2021).
